'1950s' Berman and Nathans Evening Coat
Unusual and stunning red cotton rayon evening coat with beautifully dramatic lace lining.
This Dramatic coat was made by Oscar winning costumier Monty Berman, under the label Bermans & Nathans. It is a couture standard item that has been made for a particular actress. The costume company code is visible on the label.
Bermans premises at 18 Irving Street, London was the first port of call for established and rising hollywood stars including the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton from the 1950s until the 1970s.
Noel Howard who worked with Berman from 1958 is qouted: "You went to Monty to get dressed and to get the character sorted out...". From the 1950s to the 1970s it was said to be a high point of an actors life to visit 18 Irving Street and be dressed by Monty Berman who forged strong friendships with some of our most influential actors.
The list of Berman film credits is endless, among them Gigi, Cleopatra - his costumes were the very best in costume couture and transformed those who wore them.
In 1972 Bermans amalgamated with LH Nathan and it is during this collaboration that costumes were also provided for TV and West End productions such as; Edward & Mrs Simpson, Brideshead Revisited and My Fair Lady.
We have not yet been able to identify in which production this coat was made but one can easily imagine the type of character this would have been worn by - definitely no wallflower!
Construction
The Coat features half bell sleeves and contrating cream lining. A dramatic caped collar adds to the striking nature of this garment. It is a coat to be noticed in ! A beautiful feature of this coat is the lace inner with ribbon embroidered flowers. The garment could be reversed for a softer look.
This garment has some slight fading to the back, but is otherwise in near mint condition.
